Clifford Chance leaves Slaughters behind with whopping pay rises

Clifford Chance has given pay rises of over £20,000 to some of its associates, with 1PQEs potentially earning £95,000.

Trainee salaries are rising, too. First years will be on £43,500, up from £42,000. Second years will be on £49,000, up from £47,300.

The firm has adopted the same method of presenting its rises as Linklaters which, as RollOnFriday revealed in March, has decided to wrap up the bonus figure with the salary figure to give a total compensation figure. It makes CC and Links' numbers look very good compared to the rest of the Magic Circle, since Allen & Overy, Freshfields and Slaughter and May state bald salary figures, not inclusive of bonuses. (RollOnFriday)

London head Rawlinson takes chair post at global giant Baker & McKenzie

Baker & McKenzie has appointed its first British chairman with London head Paul Rawlinson winning an election to replace current chair Eduardo Leite.

Joining the firm in 1986, Rawlinson made partner in 1996 and has served as London head for the past three years. The IP lawyer currently sits on Baker & McKenzie's policy committee and has previously led the firm's global IP practice group for six years from 2004 to 2010.

Rawlinson won the role, edging out competition from Latin America chair Claudia Prado, EMEA chair Gary Senior and former Paris managing partner Eric Lasry who also put their names up for the top job.

Rawlinson, Senior's successor as London managing partner, played a key role in executing the FTSE strategy after building a strong relationships with the likes of Unilever and British American Tobacco. Baker & McKenzie said a sucessor to the London office head role would be appointed in September.

Rawlinson will take up the role on October 23 following the firm's annual meeting in Barcelona, replacing Eduardo Leite who was elected to the role in 2010. When his previous term ended in 2014, Leite had the option to stay on as global chair for between two and four years as there was no opposition. Leite is to step down by the end of October after the first year of his extension saw revenues down 4% to $2.43bn and profits sink 12% to $799m.

However under Rawlinson's management, London revenue at the firm rose 9% in the same period to £145m, as the firm's City headcount remained flat. (Legal Business)

New insect species to be named after Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg

The late Justice Antonin Scalia has a namesake law school. Now, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has a bug.

A newly identified species of praying mantis is to be named Ilomantis ginsburgae in honour of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Scientists at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History announced the find on Wednesday after adopting a new method of praying mantis identification which uses close examination of the insect’s female genitalia. The decision to name the species after Justice Ginsburg is in tribute to the 83-year-old jurist’s ‘relentless fight for gender equality’, said a statement from the museum. The neck plate of the Ilomantis ginsburgae also bares resemblance to the decorative jabot often worn by Justice Ginsburg. As for Justice Ginsburg herself, she seemed quite pleased with the unusual tribute on Thursday, drawing parallels to Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis: ‘Gregor Samsa woke up one morning to find himself changed into a big black bug… Praying mantis, female too, is ever so much more attractive,’ she said.  (Global Legal Post)

US bid to grow human organs for transplant inside pigs

Scientists in the United States are trying to grow human organs inside pigs.

They have injected human stem cells into pig embryos to produce human-pig embryos known as chimeras.

The embryos are part of research aimed at overcoming the worldwide shortage of transplant organs.

The team from University of California, Davis says they should look and behave like normal pigs except that one organ will be composed of human cells.

The human-pig chimeric embryos are being allowed to develop in the sows for 28 days before the pregnancies are terminated and the tissue removed for analysis.

But the work is controversial. Last year, the main US medical research agency, the National Institutes of Health, imposed a moratorium on funding such experiments.

The main concern is that the human cells might migrate to the developing pig's brain and make it, in some way, more human. (BBC)

Tech giants adopt new code to combat hate speech online

Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube will take steps to prevent hate speech from spreading online under a new code of conduct agreed in partnership with the European Commission.

Under the voluntary code the technology giants will review the majority of requests to remove hate speech in less than 24 hours and to "remove or disable access" to that content if necessary.

The companies will have "clear and effective processes to review notifications regarding illegal hate speech on their services so they can remove or disable access to such content" and also produce rules or guidelines that clarify that they "prohibit the promotion of incitement to violence and hateful conduct" by users, according to the code.

The code will require the four businesses to have dedicated teams in place to review requests for hate speech to be removed. Those teams will review those requests against their own rules and guidelines as well as, where necessary, legislation designed to combat expressions of racism and xenophobia.

The companies will also take steps to "educate and raise awareness with their users about the types of content not permitted under their rules and community guidelines", it said. (out-law.com)

Cuba will never rejoin OAS over Venezuela row, says Castro

Cuban President Raul Castro says the country will not return to the Organization of American States (OAS) in a show of solidarity with Venezuela.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almargo has called for sanctions against Venezuela.

At a summit of Caribbean countries in Havana, Mr Castro called the OAS "an instrument of imperialist domination".

Meanwhile, former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has met jailed Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez.

Cuba was expelled from the OAS in 1962 but following a recent thaw in relations with the US it was suggested that the island might return.

But Mr Castro appeared to rule out the possibility, offering "our most firm solidarity to our brothers the Venezuelan people, to the legitimate government of President Nicolas Maduro". (BBC)
